N64 Classics now available on PC for free

A timeless classic from the Nintendo 64 era is now accessible for play on PC for players for free. When it comes to safeguarding its intellectual properties, Nintendo is known for its intense vigilance. Over the years, it has been witnessed that the company has shut down several fan-driven initiates and even the creators of Palworld have faced the full force of Nintendo’s legal team.

Nintendo has justifiably protected its IPs from ROM sites that look forward to profit from its beloved franchises, leading to lawsuits that are worth millions. However, it is quite hard to ignore that Nintendo often looks a bit hesitant to make its classic games available for purchase on the current eShop, unlike the fantastic Wii U digital marketplace.

Instead, fans are left waiting for a trickle of classic titles through the NSO subscription service in the hope that their cherished games will be soon added to the ever-growing library.

Emulations offer a way to enjoy classic titles for PC gamers that publishers seem uninterested in reviving such as Capcom multiplayer gem, Resident Evil Outbreak. According to DSO gaming, The Nintendo 64 game is natively available on PC for free. It is interesting to note that this native PC version of Star Fox 64 has been rebranded as Starship which is likely to sidestep any legal issues with Nintendo. Additionally, the clever strategy of the game to avoid any legal trouble is that all the assets of Starships are original and not subject to copyright. To play Starship, the users will require the official ROM file adding another layer of protection against potential legal action from Nintendo. It is yet to be seen whether the company will target this project and attempt to shut it down. If the players wish to play the official version of Star Fox 64, it is included in the Nintendo Switch Online+ Expansion tier.
