The company OpenAI has started its first advertising initiative through a pilot program, which brings sponsored content into its ChatGPT platform. The project continues for users located in the United States who will see advertisements on the ChatGPT free version and its Go subscription plan, which costs less, according to officials.
The system uses keywords and the context of a user’s conversation to activate special placement ads, which differ from traditional banner advertisements that display continuously. The system displays targeted advertisements beneath the AI response, which maintains separate visual elements from the assistant’s answer to maintain information clarity. The system provides advertisers with aggregate metrics, which include impressions and clicks, but prohibits access to specific user data and individual chat records.
Multiple well-known companies have begun participation in the testing program. Among them are Adobe, which will promote products such as Acrobat Studio and Adobe Firefly; Ford and Mazda, representing the automotive sector; Audible; and major U.S. retailers like Target and Williams-Sonoma. The meal kit service HelloFresh and the lifestyle brand Mrs. Meyer’s have joined the project to demonstrate various business sectors.
According to industry reporting, OpenAI is charging advertisers around $60 per 1,000 views during this initial phase, roughly three times the typical rate on some social platforms, indicating strong advertiser demand for early placement in AI conversation environments.
OpenAI has stated that advertising will not change ChatGPT’s output, and the current advertising tests will provide information for developing future revenue systems, which must maintain user confidence. Users will control their advertising experience by being able to reject advertisement content and handle their preference information, and they can choose to stop receiving customized ads.
The pilot program has restricted boundaries, which analysts believe will serve as a model that shows how businesses can combine their operations with AI support to develop new revenue streams through their conversational platforms and create better user experiences during critical customer engagement times.
