Google has introduced a major enhancement to its Android theft protection system, which now provides additional tools that enhance Android telephone security against theft attempts while safeguarding user information.
The enhancements, which will begin to operate in January 2026, provide three improvements, which include better authentication systems and advanced lockout mechanisms, and enhanced methods to recover lost or stolen devices.
The enhanced security features enable Android to implement its anti-theft system, which protects users from mobile theft, which remains a global threat to device owners. Google states that the new updates, which improve security systems, will protect a greater number of Android 16 and newer devices than before.

The system now includes an authentication lock control, which permits users to activate or deactivate the lock system that guards against unsuccessful logins. This control system enables users to handle their device security when someone tries to break into their system through repeated unsuccessful validation attempts.
To prevent brute-force attacks Google has extended the lockout period which occurs after users fail to enter their PIN pattern or password correctly. Users can make multiple identical incorrect entries without reaching the maximum number of allowable attempts which prevents both accidental lockouts and device access by children who explore the system or users who make unintentional selections.
The major improvement of Identity Check now extends to all features and applications that utilize Android’s Biometric Prompt system. The system requires biometric authentication for all sensitive actions which occur outside of designated security areas in third-party banking applications and Google Password Manager.
Google has enhanced its authentication system through Remote Lock, which enables users to protect their lost devices from any internet-enabled device. The updated workflow may include an optional security question or challenge to verify ownership before a remote lock is applied.
