Apples new AirTag

Apple released its first major AirTag update since the product launch in 2021. The second-generation AirTag introduces multiple enhancements that improve tracking distances, enhance item recovery processes, and enable compatibility with additional Apple Watch models.

The redesigned AirTag harnesses Apple’s latest second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the same chip powering devices such as the iPhone 17 lineup and Apple Watch Ultra 3, to extend the Precision Finding feature’s effective range by up to 50 % compared to the earlier model. Users now have the ability to begin their search for lost belongings from greater distances while receiving haptic, visual, and audio signals.

The new chip introduces improved Bluetooth capabilities, which extend detection range, while the internal speaker now operates at double its previous volume level to assist users in recognizing their AirTag notifications throughout loud settings or beyond their visible range. Precision Finding now supports all Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models, which allow users to obtain directional information directly on their wrists without needing an iPhone.

The redesigned AirTag still depends on Apple’s extensive Find My network, which consists of user-operated Apple device networks that assist in tracking items beyond Bluetooth range while sending their location data back to users. The new AirTag functions like its predecessor because it focuses on tracking objects while preserving advanced privacy features that protect user data.

The device does not keep any location information because all Find My data transmission occurs through end-to-end encryption, and the system uses protective measures against tracking without permission. The updated AirTag maintains the same compact design and long battery life as before, and it remains compatible with all existing accessories. The product is currently available at the original pricing of $29 for a single unit and $99 for a four-pack because customers who buy through Apple’s website or Apple Store app can get free engraving on their items.
