Boston Dynamics, a leading company in the field of robotics, has been thinking of upgrading its old humanoid robot with an all-electric upgrade. This is a huge upgrade from their old Atlas robot, which pretty much relied on hydraulics for most of its movement.
In their recent post on X, formerly Twitter, the company debuted the new generation Atlas with a 30-second video.
The video starts with the robot lying flat before it gets up in the most astonishing way possible. The humanoid robot is relatively slim, despite the tech packed into its body. The Atlas’s body is slimmer and longer as compared to its predecessor, combined with the cylindrical slapped head hosting its cameras and other sensors between the circular ring light on its face.
And unlike Atlas 1, Boston Dynamics plans to add Atlas 2 to its list of commercial offerings, like the Spot and Stretch robots. Just like Tesla and BMW are presently testing their car manufacturing with robots, the Atlas 2 might be treading the same path.
Boston Dynamics has stated that it will be getting additional investment from the South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai to make the commercialization of the robot possible. Hyundai will also begin experimenting with using Atlas to manufacture vehicles soon.
Besides, while Atlas’s form resembles mostly that of humans, Boston Dynamics has not put the same constraints on its range of motion. This has made the robot move in a more efficient way and its applications in emergency rescue and other such applications looks pretty optimistic.
