Google revealed a major statement today in an attempt to address the problems of malware and financial scams. Beginning in 2026, only applications from developers who have successfully completed a verification procedure will be allowed for installation on certified Android devices.
This fresh requirement targets what are referred to as certified Android devices, which must come preloaded with Google apps and have Play Protect activated. Although the Play Store already implemented comparable rules in 2023, Google is currently expanding this responsibility to cover all installation techniques. This covers sideloading, whereby users download APK files from outside sources, as well as third-party app shops.
Google seeks to solve the problem of convincing fake apps and to obstruct the attempts of repeat malicious actors who attempt to quickly disseminate dangerous apps following the deletion of the first ones. According to a recent company study, there is an amazing 50 times more malware from internet-sideloaded sources than on apps offered on Google Play.
Google has emphasized that developers will have the same freedom to directly distribute their apps to users through sideloading or to use any app store they like. Google is building a new Android Developer Console only for individuals who create apps outside of the Google Play ecosystem under this new requirement. Furthermore, students and enthusiasts will be given a different workflow from that of professional developers.
Those who submit their applications on Google Play probably already completed these verification criteria via the current Play Console. The process needs an organization’s D-U-N-S number and after that the permissions automatically revoke from harmful Android apps.
Beginning this October, the first Android app developers will have access to the verification process; by March 2026, all developers will be given the chance. For those in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, this requirement is expected to go into effect in September 2026. According to Google, particularly impacted by these kinds of fraudulent app schemes have been certain countries. Following this, worldwide verification will be phased in beginning in 2027.
