Rajendra Prasad Jakku, a Vice President and Information Security Specialist at a leading global financial services company, took an unusual path to beginning his career. After earning a degree in Commerce, Jakku decided to join a software company that developed stock exchange products, thus entering the tech world. This unusual combination of business knowledge and early exposure to the technical world made it easy for him to work later on in protecting financial systems.

His first jobs consisted of comprehending complex financial products and IT system security, which helped him build up the domain expertise that would later be required for his responsibilities. During a period of almost 25 years in the business, Rajendra Prasad Jakku has moved across a wide range of roles from software implementation, financial operations, and risk management to anti-money-laundering leadership in European banks before stepping into information security.

This entire experience, spanning business, compliance, and technology, finally culminated in his eventual role in managing data protection and identity control functions at the enterprise level.

Transition Into Risk and Compliance

As the financial markets and regulations changed throughout the early 2000s, Jakku transitioned into risk management, audit reporting, and compliance leadership roles. He stated that the move was not just based on personal ambition alone, but he also recognized the industry’s need for proper controls during that time, especially after the introduction of new regulation frameworks and mounting cyber threats.

The need for security people who could understand not only the technology but also the risk to the organization was clearly demonstrated by the compliance with standards such as Sarbanes-Oxley and the European directives on market abuse.

In those years, Jakku developed a strong sense of the value of clean and orderly systems that first match the goals set by the business and then the controls that can stop operational breakdowns and the loss of the company’s good name. His mixed early experiences made it easy for him to fully understand both the technical and compliance sides, a combo that later on became vital as the threats got worse.

Evolution of Information Security Leadership

IAM Control Testing

Jakku took over the current leadership role in 2014, in charge of IAM Control Testing and managing the company’s most sensitive data and system protection efforts. He has been a witness to the rapid growth of cyber threats and, at the same time, the fast new technology deployments in the last 10 years.

These two opposing forces have changed the role of information security from just a supportive function to a major enterprise necessity, especially in the case of financial services, where the costs of data breaches and unauthorized accessibility are still very high. Jakku claims that his firm keeps updating its security posture on a regular basis, not only with the help of defensive measures but also by fostering the capabilities provided by AI and Machine Learning.

The use of these technologies has given the analysts the power to spot patterns and foresee threats with a greater efficiency than that of the manual process alone, thus decreasing the chance of breaches and enhancing the speed of response.

Advice for Future Information Security Professionals

Advice for young professionals

The expansion of information and cybersecurity degree programs at universities all over the world has made it clear that Jakku is the right person to provide guidance to future professionals. He points out that having a solid understanding of both technical skills and business acumen is absolutely essential.

He reckons that knowledge of risk frameworks, regulatory obligations, and how security decisions affect the organization’s profits is as good as being skilled in using the various security tools and technologies. He also points to critical soft skills: analytical thinking, communication, leadership, and the ability to explain complex security concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
