Vice President Kamala Harris has been greatly leveraging the viral social media meme to garner the attention of Gen-Z voters. However, this unconventional social media campaign strategy is not familiar to older voters, who are still wondering “What’s a meme”
Some popular social media influencers have responded to the campaign, presenting their different opinion. For instance, Joe Rogan warns Kamala Harris will win because people are giving into the bulls—’ like never before.
The whole situation started when President Biden officially endorsed Harris name as a presidential candidate and hours later Charli XCX tweeted, “Kamala IS brat”. The campaign’s official X account then capitalized on “brat” and changed their cover photo to a lime-hued color, which was used in Charli XCX album cover. And, they even replaced the word “Brat” with “Kamala HQ.”
According to Eric Dahan, who is a Founder of Mighty Joy, “It’s a tool, and like any tool she’s using it for her, but it also will continue to be used against her. She’s leaning into a lot of this stuff she was made fun of to just kind of laugh it off [and] make it seem like just a personality trait. But she’s sort of building her brand around this, specifically with the whole brat culture thing.”
But, Dahan has also warned that there are a lot of Gen-Z Americans who see these kinds of political memes as “Super Cringe”, making her “Less Serious” about elections.
“From the social media standpoint, she’s the one we’re talking about now, not Trump,” Said Dahan.
On the other hand, Sergio José Gutiérrez, who is the CEO of Espora CEO, said that Trump is still the most “memeable” figure in American politics.
“Donald Trump continues to dominate the meme culture with a high engagement in viral content.” He added.
And, in regard to Harris’s campaign, Gutiérrez asked “This sort of less serious, more jovial tone is that really what is going to work given all the issues that we’re facing?”
