Meta Boosts Security

Meta Platforms has introduced a series of new security features across its messaging ecosystem, aiming to curb the growing threat of online scams targeting users on its platforms. The company uses its updates to improve WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger by developing methods to find suspicious behavior and provide users with clear warnings about potential threats.

Earlier, the meta provided a linked device chat lock. Now, the new device-linking alert system on WhatsApp allows users to secure their accounts because it helps them detect when someone tries to access their accounts without permission. The platform provides users with access to multiple devices by enabling them to connect their accounts through QR code scanning, which works with their laptops and tablets.

Scammers have turned this feature into a weapon because they trick users into giving them their pairing codes through fake QR codes, which activate hidden links that enable the scammers to access the users’ accounts. The new safeguard will enable WhatsApp to show a warning when the system detects unusual behavior during the linking process.

The notification informs users that approving the request could grant another device access to their messages and encourages them to review the action carefully before proceeding. The warning shows users where the linking request came from because it offers extra details that help users choose safer options.

Meta has extended its fraud-prevention tools to combat online fraud across its entire platform network, which includes WhatsApp. The company tests alerts on Facebook, which show up when a friend request displays suspicious characteristics that include limited mutual connections and a profile location that differs from the sender’s claimed country. These signals often indicate impersonation or scam attempts, prompting users to review or reject the request.

The initiative forms part of Meta’s broader effort to tackle digital fraud. The company removed over 159 million scam advertisements from multiple countries in 2025 while banning more than 12.1 million fraudulent advertisements, which included most of the content detected through automated systems in India.
