Microsoft Unveils Copilot Cowork: AI Agents Now Autonomously Execute Tasks

Microsoft has developed an artificial intelligence tool named Microsoft Copilot Cowork, which enables users to complete office tasks with minimal human assistance. The feature enables AI systems to perform multi-step tasks through multiple business applications instead of merely providing single responses.

The tool functions as part of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, which enables users to run it through common applications like Outlook, Teams, and Excel. The system establishes a connection with user work data and digital activities to analyze requests while executing tasks, which include automatic meeting organization, research summary preparation, and project plan development.

Anthropic developed the core technology for the feature through its Claude AI models, which use their models for their core operation. The system uses these models to transform complex requests into smaller tasks, which it processes through sequential execution until completion. The system works continuously in the background while providing users with real-time progress updates.

Microsoft describes the tool as an ‘agentic’ AI system because it enables software to reason through tasks while executing them on different software platforms. The system will automatically gather research materials and create internal communications while setting up planning sessions when users request product launch preparations.

Microsoft allows users to maintain control over the system despite its ability to operate independently. People can monitor the AI’s progress, adjust instructions, or stop the process if needed. The company built the system according to its present security and governance systems, which protect enterprise data from unauthorized access.

The feature is currently a research preview, which will be released to the public through Microsoft’s enterprise programs later this year. The analysts consider the launch to be part of Microsoft’s strategy to develop AI partnerships while enhancing Copilot’s functions beyond its basic chat support. Microsoft uses Copilot Cowork to show that AI functions as more than a digital assistant because it actively participates in all aspects of workplace tasks.
