Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella recently stated, “Google earns more from Windows than Microsoft itself.” It highlighted Google’s stronghold in search and distribution.
The latest figures revealed by StatCounter reveal that Google commands an impressive 89.74% of the search market, leaving Microsoft Bing trailing far behind at just 3.97%.
During the antitrust hearings last year, Nadella pointed out that Google plays unfairly with Bing, especially because of its exclusive partnerships with Apple which he claims to hamper the growth and visibility of Bing.
However, as per reports, Microsoft may be resorting to questionable strategies to enhance its market presence against Google in the search arena. Curiously, if the users with to look for Google on Bing without logging into their Microsoft account, they will find themselves on a page that closely mimics the design of Google.
It has been highlighted that this is a clear tactic by Microsoft to dissuade users from switching to Google by making Bing look more like its rival for that specific search.
This makeshift Google-like interface on Bing consists of familiar features including a search bar and an image that resembles Google’s Doodle. Windows Central has also tried to replicate these results, confirming that Bing indeed takes on the appearance of Google when searching for Google. However, it still creates other queries that hint that this might on be a deliberate design choice.
Significantly, if the users scroll down Bing’s search results, they will find Google Search results at the bottom, along with different indicators that point to Microsoft. In a post on X, Parisa Tabriz, Google’s Chrome lead, remarked that it represents a ‘new low’ for Microsoft. It is also important to mention that Google right now is facing investigations in both the United States and the European Union for allegedly misusing its market power to favor its own products.
