Something exciting might be coming to our Gmail app on Android soon. Google has this cool Gemini button in Gmail for Workspace users—basically, it helps with email summaries and a bunch of other tasks. It’s been around for a bit in the web version. And it looks like it might be making its way to our Android phones too.
Some tech wizards did an APK teardown, which is a fancy way of saying they peeked into the app’s future features through its code. They found hints of this new Gemini button in the latest version of Gmail (version 2024.05.19.635289964). They even managed to get it working by tweaking some settings and sharing a video about it.
Right now, our Gmail app on Android has a “summarize this email” button under the subject line, which is handy but pretty basic. The new Gemini button, which looks like a cute little star next to the archive button, is a game-changer. It can do so much more, like give you reply suggestions, tweak the tone of your emails, and even handle some non-email tasks.
And what’s more, Gemini can dip into your past emails to pull up details, like remembering your last train ride. However, it’s not all-powerful yet. When asked to show unread emails in the chat window, it politely declined. So, it’s not as deeply integrated as the web version.
Before you get too excited and start checking your Gmail app every five minutes, a little heads-up: This feature is still primarily for Workspace users, at least for now.
